Fish River Canyon

The Fish River Canyon which is located in the south – central part of Namibia and is is the largest canyon in the Southern Hemisphere, second in size to the Grand Canyon in the United States and in addition the longest flowing interior river in Namibia.

The Fish River Canyon is 161 km in length and up to 27km wide, and 549m deep. Its enormity obscures any view if the plains beyond, as if all that were left in some post apocalyptic scenario was this pebbly rut.

During the winter the Fish River flows spasmodically, usually flooding in late summer after which it ceases to flow leaving it part in sludgy green puddles, or a chain of long narrow pools on the sand rock floor.
